Ravana requested Lord Shiva to enter Linka, and it was accepted by Lord Shankar. Lord Shiva is pleased and presents a Shivlinga to Ravana, instructing him not to allow this Shivlinga to be lowered anywhere until the establishment of Ganatvyasthana.
After listening to the instructions, Ravana bowed down, took permission to leave, and started on his way to Lankegi. On his way, Ravana gave this Shivlinga to a cowherd present here for a small number and warned him not to put down this Shivlinga.
But the cowherd got tired of Ravana taking too much time with Lagushanka and put the Shivling down. The place where the shepherd placed the Shivlinga is known today as Sri Vaijnath Jyotirlinga. There is also a famous legend of Ravana and Shivlinga.
The Legend of Amrita.
While churning the sea, there was a competition between gods and demons to get nectar. While churning the sea, 14 gems appeared, including both Amrit and Dhanvantari, important gems. Lord Vishnu caught both of these gems and hid them in the Shivlinga, just as the demon found Amrut and was about to attack him.
After seeing the gems hidden in the shiv linga, the demon started breaking the shiv linga. While breaking the Shivlinga, a bright light came from the Shivlinga, so the demons failed to break this Shivlinga and fled to the place.
