History of Aundha Nagnath Temple, Hingoli
Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga, located in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra, is also known as Nageshwar Jyotirlinga. Aundha Nagnath Temple is one of the major religious tourist places in Maharashtra state.
Built in the thirteenth century AD, this temple is known as an ancient temple. As the construction of the temple dates back to ancient times, various carvings have been done on the walls of the temple.
In ancient times, this temple was attacked by Mughal kings. The temple was heavily damaged by the attack. The Aundha Nagnath Temple dates back to the time of the Pandavas.

Mughal ruler Aurangzeb attacked Aundha Nagnath Temple, a major religious tourist site in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra. Aurangabad attacked various Hindu temples in Maharashtra to destroy Hindu temples.
Aurangzeb’s attack on the Aundha Nagnath temple caused a lot of damage to this temple. Ahilyabai Holkar has contributed a lot to repairing the damage to the temple. Seeing the damage done to the temple, Ahilyabai Holkar decided to renovate the temple.
The decision to renovate the temple led to the rebuilding of the temple, and the temple is now safely located in the town of Hingoli. Even though the Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga has been renovated, the collection of antiquities at the place is still intact.
It is also said that a swarm of bees attacked a Mughal soldier when Aurangzeb came to demolish the Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga. Seeing the attack on the Mughal soldiers by the bee, the Mughal soldiers gave up and failed to demolish the temple.
So the temple was not completely demolished, and the temple is safe today. Ahilyabai Holkar preserved the historical site by renovating the part of the temple that the Mughal soldiers succeeded in demolishing.
Sant Namdev Maharaj at Aundha Nagnath Temple
Sant Namdev Maharaj is world-famous today as a well-known saint and poet. Saints had nothing to do with caste, religion, or race, but some people divided people based on the caste-religion system. Sant Namdev Maharaj was one of the gurus of Sikhism.
His work is reflected in the writings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. Sant Namdev Maharaj is also known as Sri Guru Granth Saheb. Saint Namdev Maharaj used to come to Aundha Nagnath Temple to worship Lord Shankar. As Sant Namdev Maharaj was a Sikh Guru, some priests objected to him and prevented him from entering the temple.
If Sant Namdev Maharaj came to the Aundha Nagnath Temple to offer prayers, he was chased away by the priests, but Sant Namdev Maharaj was a devotee of Lord Shankar and used to come near the temple. Saint Namdev Maharaj came to the back side of the temple and worshiped Lord Shankar.
Lord Shankar, being pleased with Sant Namdev Maharaj, turned towards the opposite side of the temple and stopped at the place where Sant Namdev Maharaj used to offer prayers. Even if you look at the Aundha Nagnath temple today, you will find that the temple is facing backward.
We see that all the temples have steps on the front side, but this is the reason why the steps of Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga temple are on the backside. This event is also known as a feature of the Aundha Nagnath temple.

The Legend of Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga.
It was a period of exile. The Pandavas built an ashram in the forest of Hingoli in Maharashtra. The cows in the hermitage of the Pandavas used to drink the water of the nearby river and leave their milk in the river. One day, Bhima noticed this behavior in the cow. Bhima saw this scene and summoned Yudhistra.
When the Pandavas went to the river bank, they realized that a great god was in the river, so they started drawing water from the river. Bhima struck the river three times using his mace. Bleeding started from the spot after the impact.
After a while, Linga came out to that place. After the linga came out, Yudhistra built a temple at the same place and installed the Jyotirlinga. The place where this temple was built is known as Phosa Nagnath Temple or Aundha Nagnath Jyotirlinga.
Legends of Nageshwar Darukavane
Most of the area of Aundha Nagnath is covered by dense forest. Snakes exist in large numbers in the forest. This forest got its name from the name of the demon Daruka. The demon Daruka was harassing the hermits living in this area.
Sometimes you even imprison them. The gods drove away the demons from this place, but Daruka was a devotee of the demon Lord Shiva and was also blessed by Goddess Parvati Mata.
Demons took advantage of the description given by Goddess Parvati and converted the entire forest into islands. After being transformed into islands, the demons once again started doing cruel things like harassing the sages, torturing them, and imprisoning them.
Among the ascetics imprisoned in Beta was a devotee of Shiva. That Shiva bhakti pleased Lord Shiva by worshiping Lord Shiva and chanting mantras. After being pleased, Lord Shiva destroyed the demons in this place. The demon Daruka regretted his mistake and apologized to Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati requested him to stay in the forest and Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati accepted this request and they established themselves as Lord Nageshwar and Nageshwari at that place. Thus Nageshwar Darukavane also had a legend.
