What Is the History of Sinhagad Fort, Pune?

Sinhagad Fort was earlier known as Kondhana. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s father, i.e., Shahajiraje Bhosale, was given the job in the Pune region.

Adil Shah thought that the son of Shahjiraje Bhosale, i.e., Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, would also accept the Jahagirdari of the order.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj decided to establish his own kingdom, i.e., Swarajya, so he rejected the Jahagirdari of the order.

Adil Shah imprisoned Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s father and told Shivaji Maharaj that if he wanted his father then you have to hand over Kondana Fort to us so Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj gave Kondana Fort back to Adil Shah in 1649.

Treaty of Purandara

In the Treaty of Purandara in 1665 AD, twenty-three forts were to be given to Mirzaraj Jai Singh, which included the Kondana fort.

At the request of Rajmata Jijau, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj started preparations to include the Kondhana Fort back in Swaraj.

Subedar Tanaji Malusare undertook this campaign while planning to include Kondhana Fort in Swarajya.

They attacked this fort with some mavals and took it under Swarajya. But Subhedar Tanaji Malusare died tragically in this battle.

When Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj heard this news, he was very sad and said that the fort had come but the lion had gone. After this, the name of this fort was changed from Kondana to Sinhagad.
